William "Bill" Lester McCarley, a lifelong resident of Alvarado, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025, at the age of 68. Born on July 23, 1956, to Lester B. McCarley and Wilma Elizabeth (Mabry) McCarley, Bill completed the family joining his parents, Wilma and “Bud” and his sister, Shirley. On October 20, 2009, Bill married the love of his life, Carol (Smart) McCarley. Together, Bill and Carol shared a life filled with love, companionship, and cherished memories.
Bill was known for his hardworking spirit, love for the outdoors, and dedication to family and friends. He worked in the construction business, where his strong work ethic and craftsmanship were evident in everything he built. Beyond his career, he found joy in working around the barn and shop, caring for his tractors, and being an active member of the local tractor club. His love for animals, especially horses and dogs, was well known, and he was always happiest surrounded by the creatures he adored. Bill also had a knack for discovering treasures while shopping for tools, a pastime he enjoyed immensely.
Bill was a descendant of early-day pioneers and settlers. He was an avid supporter of Alvarado’s Old Settler’s Reunion and served on its’ Board of Directors a number of years.
Bill was deep-rooted in the area, his whole life was lived at the same location, once known as “Sycamore Hill”. His calm demeanor, genuine strength of character and faith drew much adoration from family and friends. His laughter, stories, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Lester B. and Wilma Elizabeth McCarley, and his sister, Shirley Lee McCarley. He is survived by his devoted wife, Carol, and his special nephew, David and Delaney Chastain and family. He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Deanna Dougan and her husband Harold, William Conner Jr. and his wife Sandra Kay, Robert Charles Conner and his wife Kim, and their families, including granddaughter Nevaeh Phillips. Other grandchildren, Daniel and Lacey Lowell, Tony Lowell, and J.T. Also mourning his passing is the Robinson family, Kay, Dale, Jim, and Daniel, all originally from Geary, Oklahoma.
Bill was blessed with a host of other grandchildren and countless friends who will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Clayton Kay Vaughan Funeral Home in Alvarado. A celebration of Bill’s life will follow on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Shepherd’s Valley Church, with interment afterward at Glenwood Cemetery in Alvarado.
