Travis Ray Obituary

There are ordinary men, and then there was Travis Earl Ray, Jr., or "Big Daddy" to his kids and grandkids. On September 14, 2026, at the age of 81, Travis closed the final chapter on a life fiercely lived. He left this world peacefully in Grandview, Texas, knowing he was reunited with Joyce, the love of his life.

Born February 7, 1945, in Austin, Texas, to Travis Earl Ray, Sr. and Betty Jo Barger, Travis grew up in Alvarado, Texas. He spent his youth raising a little hell with a tight-knit pack of friends and competing in all sports, where he consistently stood out as a star athlete.

After graduating from Alvarado High School, Travis attended the University of Texas, earning a five-year degree in Pharmacy. He then made his way back to his hometown to take over Alvarado Drug, the business his father started, running it faithfully until his retirement.

Travis had many passions, a few of which tipped into borderline obsessions—namely Texas Longhorns sports, reading, his dogs, Bud Light, Bob Dylan and history. Despite being technologically and mechanically challenged, he could kick anyone's butt in Trivial Pursuit. He also loved snow skiing, fly fishing in Montana, hiking, cooking, watching TV, and traveling with his wife and soulmate, Joyce Ann.

Travis built a vast network of devoted friends and acquaintances—a true testament to his character, generosity, and integrity. He was a medical miracle and a source of inspiration to everyone around him, overcoming major health obstacles with sheer determination and grit.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Mike Naranjo, Pam Peters, Paige (Steven) Money, Emily (Mike) Smith, Marcus Naranjo, and Allison Spradlin; eight grandchildren; his sister, Jo Ann (Jerry) Cameron; and her two children. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Joyce Ann Ray.

Honorary Pallbearers: Chuck Cummings, Rom Welborn, Jack Angel, James Mahanay, James Robertson, and Tommy Head.
