James “Mickey” Arthur Thomas Sr. was born on February 25, 1941, in Cleburne, Texas, to Oran Thomas and Anna Mae Thomas. A lifelong resident of Alvarado, Texas, Mickey passed away on August 26, 2026, at the age of 85.
Mickey lived a full and active life centered around his family and community. He enjoyed hunting with greyhounds and was an avid sports enthusiast, especially enjoying basketball, football, and softball. He played on a softball team called the Flat Cats, who were known for being quite good back in the day. His children have fond memories of watching him play.
Family reunions held a special place in Mickey’s heart, and he loved bringing everyone together and helping organize these treasured gatherings. He also enjoyed barbecuing and sharing good food with the people he loved. Mickey devoted much of his time to the children in his community through coaching and refereeing, leaving a positive influence on many young lives.
Above all, Mickey was a loving and devoted father. His children grew up carrying forward the values he taught and demonstrated throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ola Mae Thomas; his parents, Oran Thomas and Anna Mae Thomas; his son, Ronald Remon Matthews; and his siblings, Flora May Thomas, Matthew Thomas, Lena Mae Thomas, and Lee Thomas.
Those left to cherish his memory include his former wife, Brenda Matthews Thomas; his children, Kevin Thomas and Kenya, James Arthur Thomas Jr. and Kristen, Daphne Young and Tracy, Raymond Thomas, Ronald Thomas and Naketa, Patrick Jackson and Wakana, Tina Thomas, Aaron Thomas, and Bernita Jones; 28 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Clayton Kay Vaughan Funeral Home.
The community will gather to celebrate Mickey’s life and legacy on Saturday, September 5, 2026, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at A Change for Christ Church in Alvarado, Texas. Interment will follow the service at Glenwood Cemetery.
