Obituary

Gary Robert Dietrich, 68, passed away on March 14, 2022 in Alvarado, Texas. Born in Andrews, Texas on July 26, 1953, he worked for many years in the oil and gas industry before returning to school to obtain his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Tarleton State University in 2001. He worked for 15 years as an auditor for the U.S. Department of Defense before retiring in 2016.

He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially in the mountains, and he enjoyed fishing, camping, grilling, smoking meats, hunting and trapping. A lifelong tinkerer, he took up countless hobbies, a few of which included hatching and raising quail, raising chickens for “farm-fresh eggs,” welding, and other various projects around the house. He and his wife Shirley spent the early years of retirement traveling the country via RV, including driving all the way to Alaska and spending a summer exploring the beauty of the Alaskan frontier.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley, his son, Dustin Dietrich of Alvarado, his daughter, Alicia Dietrich, and her husband, Fred Niemann III of Austin, and his brother, Harry Dietrich of Longview, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Marie Dietrich, and his brother, Larry Dietrich.
