Edwina Stufflebeme (née Klatte), born in Brenham, Texas, on April 2, 1938, died peacefully on June 10 at the age of 85. She was the youngest child of Edwin and Lydia Klatte and a graduate of Brenham High School’s class of 1956. Just three years after high school, Edwina obtained her teaching degree from Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College. She then left Brenham for San Antonio where she taught at the local Air Force base. She married Kenneth Stufflebeme in 1963 and taught schoolchildren at the U.S. Army Military Base on Governor’s Island in New York. Edwina and Kenneth eventually settled in 1964 in Itasca, Texas, where she taught elementary school for the Itasca Independent School District for over 25 years. She and her husband proudly served the Hill County community for over 50 years. Edwina opened her home to family and friends, frequently hosting wedding parties, baby showers, and other celebrations. She loved entertaining and shopping for china and other unique treasures. She would often share stories of the many children she taught during her teaching years.
She was blessed with two sons and two grandsons, and “Winnie” was definitely one of those grandmothers who would let them get away with anything and everything. She was sharp as a tack and resilient. Even during her twilight years, Edwina remembered so many people and details from her past, including how she lost her father suddenly at the tender age of 10 and how she and her sister courageously overcame that tragedy. It was that same inner strength that she pulled from again when she lost her husband, Kenneth, in 2016 and youngest son, Jim, in 2017.
Edwina is survived by her son Mike Stufflebeme and his wife, Lauri, by her grandchildren, Zachary Stufflebeme and Spencer Lockwood, her sister-in-law, Pat Campbell of Austin, and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends.
Edwina is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Kenneth Stufflebeme, her youngest son, James Edward Stufflebeme, sister, Allene, and husband-in-law, A.G. Holtkamp of Brenham.
Her family would like to thank the amazing staff at Belmont Village in Houston, Texas, for lovingly caring for her for these last five years, including Dr. Lee and his team.
Family and friends are invited to attend the service, Thursday, June 15 at 11:00 a.m., at the old Presbyterian Church in Itasca. The service will be officiated by Diane Barnes. Pallbearers are John Cockerham, Don Holtkamp, Greg Sewell, Greg Appel, Kirk Tames, and John Steck. Reception immediately following the graveside service at the Presbyterian Church. All are welcome.
